The Simple Indoor Cat Feeding Guide 🐾
Keep Your Cat Healthy Without Overthinking
A simple, real-life guide to feeding your indoor cat the right way — without stress, confusion, or complicated rules.
Meet my Cats🐾
I have two Domestics Short Hair Cats

- Bechic (female), born October 11, 2024
- M’aiq (male), born November 11, 2024
We adopted them from the SPCA, and they are incredibly affectionate.
Every morning around 6am, they gently wake us up — usually by rubbing their noses against our faces…
and Bechic has her own special habit: licking our toes 😄
🍽️ My Feeding Routine (Simple & Effective)
I feed my cats once a day, in the morning.
This routine was approved by my veterinarian, as long as:
- you follow the recommended portion on the food packaging
- and adjust it based on your cat’s weight
👉 This makes things simple and consistent.
🥣 Dry Food Only (My Personal Choice)
I only feed dry food (kibble).
Why?
- it’s more convenient for daily life
- easy to manage portions
- doesn’t spoil
I always buy food from specialised pet stores, not supermarkets.
👉 In my opinion:
- supermarket food is cheaper
- but often saltier and lower quality
So I prefer investing in better nutrition for their long-term health.
🧠 Do Cats Overeat?
In my experience, my cats regulate themselves very well.
- They eat throughout the day
- There is usually a little food left in the evening
Also, because there are two of them:
👉 they play, run, and chase each other
👉 which keeps them active and helps balance their food intake
🎂 Treats (Very Occasionally)
I keep treats rare and intentional.
- On their birthday → they get a small can of wet food
- I avoid giving it regularly because:
- it’s expensive
- I don’t want them to get used to it
👉 Also, when they stayed in a pet boarding facility,
they were only given dry food — so I keep their routine consistent.
🐾 Reward Treats (Positive Behaviour)
Sometimes, when guests visit and I need to keep my cats in a separate space,
I give them a small treat afterward.
👉 It’s just a way to say:
“Thank you for being calm and well-behaved.”
But this is not frequent — just occasional.
💧 Water Setup (Very Important)
Hydration is essential.
Here’s what I use:
- A motion-activated water fountain in the main living area
- A second fountain in their sunroom
- An additional water dispenser in my bedroom
👉 The fountains
:
- keep water moving
- filter it
- make it more appealing for cats
⚠️ My Smart Backup Trick
Next to every fountain, I place a regular bowl of water.
Why?
👉 Just in case:
- power goes out
- the fountain stops working
➡️ My cats always have access to water, no matter what.
❤️ What Works for Me
This routine is:
- simple
- low-stress
- easy to maintain
And most importantly:
👉 my cats are happy, active, and healthy.
🥣 Bowl & Water Care (Hygiene Tips)
I use stainless steel bowls for both food and water, including the fountains.
Here’s my routine:
- Before serving breakfast: I wash the food bowls like I would my own dishes and dry them with a paper towel.
- Extra water bowls: washed and refreshed every day to ensure clean drinking water.
- Placement: I always keep the bowls far from the litter box — cats dislike eating near their toilet, just like we wouldn’t eat in the bathroom!
⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Overfeeding your cat
- Using low-quality food
- Not refreshing water daily
- Placing food too close to the litter box
😸At the end of the day, keeping things simple and consistent is the key to a happy, healthy indoor cat 🐾
